One day I purchased a Revised Standard Bible in Johns Christian Stores, in Wheaton IL. I bought it because it was the only floppy gold edged leather Bible in the RSV translation they had for sale. I bought it despite the fact it contained the so called apocryphal books. A few years later I became curious and decided to read one of these “extra” books. I’ve always loved Solomons writings so I began to read Wisdom of Solomon. When I read the second chapter it blew me away. It was clearly the strongest prophecy of the Christ I had ever read. The writers of the New Testament were clearly aware of this as I recalled the passages from the New Testament relating to this chapter in my mind as I read. That single chapter mapped to so many passages in the New Testament.
I discovered this connection of Wisdom chapter 2 and the gospels had been known all along. In English, even English Protestant Bibles, the relation of this chapter to the gospels was known and documented until the mid 1800’s when it vanished. It since has vanished from our knowledge, a fact which itself is rather curious. Now we find “scholars” teaching that the authors of the New Testament never used the Deuterocanonical books ( aka Apocrypha ) as one of the chief arguments about why the Catholics are wrong to have have used it.
Over time I found more and more examples of New Testament use of the deuterocanonical books. I began to ask myself a simple question. How could we as protestants, basing our belief on “The Bible and The Bible Only”, expect to arrive at truth if we weren’t using the same texts that Christ and the authors of the new testament were clearly using ? Eventually that path led me to join the Catholic church. I want to show the relationships between the New Testament and these books that are no longer in everyones bibles. Its become a true fascination of mine.
